The Toyota Land Cruiser is indestructible, you know this and so do I and so do you. They run a billion miles subsisting primarily on a steady diet of neglect and sweet crude, or so the legend goes. The reason for this is two fold:

Strong overbuilt parts

Toyota's fanatical attention to detail and construction processes

That's why I wasn't too worried when I bought one with over 220000 miles on it, sight unseen, 1000 miles away.

So now its 260000 miles old young, including the windshield which...believe it or not...is original. I know this because it still has the faded etched serial number that came on all the glass on my anniversary edition. Its pitted but serviceable with no cracks and only a few small nicks on the surface.

The problem that i am having is that the seals for this truck aren't coping too well with the arid desert climate as well as they had been in its previous humid homes of Georgia and Seattle respectively and so there is a small leak developing in the drivers side quarter that is starting to get annoying. This is due to the fact that rubber, amazingly, predates the Land Cruiser and because Toyota didn't invent it, its not immortal.

I have had moderate success filling the gap with dielectric silicon grease but it crossed my mind today to find out what it would cost to replace my windshield, i mean, i don't need to but it What the hell...right?

Knowing ahead of time to insist on Toyota replacement glass given that its thicker and higher quality than most replacement glass and probably actually diamond the evidence of said quality is...sorry...clear to see. So i ring up the dealer to find out what it would cost me.

$900

For the part. No seals, no special Toyota black window goo, no labor...nothing. Yup, diamond.

Cheapo safelite glass? $183

So here is the deal; These parts are the real deal, they are well made, and build to be durable, the cost of which is, um, cost. What, you think adamantium is cheap?

I don't know if it's this way in every state, just some, or if it's a Florida thing, but here your insurance cover windscreens with no deductible and no questions asked. This could be due to our roads being constructed from crushed seashells and their tendency to be flung up on the highway, however. If that holds true for your location, insurance should replace it for even the smallest little crack.

I don't think I've ever found a OEM windshield that's reasonably priced. Some side window glass, yeah, but never the windshield. Aftermarket is always cheaper. You're not getting what the car came with, and it won't have the little OE marking in the corner, but its just like the real thing.... until they started adding all this sound deadener and lately laser cruise control and rain sensing shit to the windshield area.... some newer stuff isn't carried by the aftermarket. Yet.

How much would a glass shop charge you to pull the glass and replace only the rubber seal? If there are no cracks you could even get the glass polished at the same time.

I haven't, but there aren't too many wrecked cruisers in Utah to start with, they get picked over clean pretty fast. I keep my eye on the classifieds though.

I bought a Land Cruiser with 300k miles, that had previously spent a few years in Peru roaming the jungle. It's a handful to drive and always has issues, but not once has it stranded me or failed to start. (despite an impossible to locate vacuum leak)

It's like the millenium falcon.

Thing is, I have it on several good sources that the Toyota glass (specifically Land Cruiser Glass) is thicker and more durable. The idea being that they KNOW it will be hit with stones and crap so they made it thicker. I mean...how could it not be, its 260 freaking thousand miles old without a crack!

My glass was original with no cracks, until I moved up north. Now it has an A pillar to A pillar crack. Yay super good heater, old pitted glass, and negative temps!

That is a good pint. Nothing under 5 megatons seems to do so much as dent a Land Cruiser.

true story: I bought some spares off a guy with a 6 inch lifted 35 inch tired fzj80 that was t-boned at a light flipped 1.5 times and ended up on the roof and when I went to pick up the parts it looks like it had been hit at 20 mph and gently fallen over.

Overnight parts from Japan?

Go to a smaller glass shop, not a chain that does insurance form replacements all day long.. see what they can do. When my 86 lost it's shiny trim around the front window I ended up in a smaller shop where the owner came and looked at it.. he replaced it all with black rubber seal and it was ready for another 300K..

Don't even get me started on taking the westfalia into shops..

its a start. I asked around on the forums and no one seemed to have any suggestions. The shop I take mine too is constantly full of cruisers, but I don't think they would do the glass.

I had a similar experience in high school when some merry pranksters decided it would be fun to throw a pumpkin through the back windshield of my '90 Acura Legend coupe. I hope they were only intending for the pumpkin to splat on the car, but it shattered the windshield. My dad woke me up the day after Halloween and gave me the news. Then he told me to go vacuum all the shattered glass out of the car.

Luckily it was covered by insurance, because the factory replacement part was $900.

No recommendations on Mud?

You might also have luck at a shop like freightliner or other transport truck shops. They usually don't fool around, know what they are doing, and only fix things once..

Truth, Thing is, the FSM (FActory Service Manual) has a very specific land cruiser procedure that I hear is important to get right, so I would need to find:

a. a competent shop

b. that will take the job

c. and will follow directions.

Might be a tough call. And yeah, no help on mud at all. lame.

If you know the original OEM part supplier for Toyota, maybe you can find the same glass with a lesser price tag and not the Toyota name stamped on it?

Mine was leaking in both lower corners. What i did was went to home depot and bought some black tar like caulking (I can look up the exact sealant type but its what is the type recommended to be used when installing the windshield). I ran a flat head screwdiriver all the way around the seal to get it up away from the glass and then ran a thick bead all the way around the windshield up underneath the seal. Then wipe down with acetone to clean up and you're done. I did this 16 months ago and no leaks since. Total cost ~$6.

basically exactly what I did with the Dielectric grease. I might get the tar stuff instead as this stuff seems to wash away in snow.

yeah, I think i probably should have searched harder, but I was in a hurry. There is a shop in town that may do a lift and reseal for me using the FSM, so we will see what they charge. The owner has a well restored FJ40 so that bodes well. I would rather know I don't have a rust frame and that the water isn't just going someplace else. FYI, I asked about the glass and the Land Cruiser is not the most expensive glass, the Prius windshield is $1400!

Good point about the rust, hadn't considered that. I'm moving to Michigan soon so I should probably seal it up properly.
